As rumored, GTA 5 is being given away for free on the Epic Games Store this week, leading to loads of people flocking towards the storefront to get their hands on a copy of their own.
The amount of people looking to get a free copy of Grand Theft Auto 5 was so high that the Epic Games Store servers are down, any attempt to log on resulting in an Error 500 message.
Epic Games Store Error 500
“An unexpected error has occured”, reads the Error 500 text that pops up when you try to reach the Epic Games Store via browser.
Trying to redeem your free GTA V copy via the Epic Games Store desktop app doesn’t result in an Error 500 message, but you’ll likely find that store pages aren’t loading.
There’s no reason to worry about not being able to get a copy of GTA V for yourself. The title will be free on the Epic Games Store for the following week.
We also expect the Error 500 issue to be solved in a matter of hours. While you’re waiting, check our list of Epic Games Store exclusives and free games of 2020.
We are currently experiencing high traffic on the Epic Games Store.

We are aware that users may be encountering slow loading times, 500 errors, or launcher crashing at this time and we are actively working to scale. We'll provide an update as soon as we can.
Update: Epic Games Store users should no longer encounter Error 500 when attempting to log in or redeeming their free GTA V copy.
We've deployed updates to provide resolution for these issues, and most users should be able to access the Epic Games Store and Launcher at this time. We'll continue to monitor traffic and provide updates if further issues are encountered. Thank you for your continued patience!
