A fan-made Fallout 2 3D remake is currently in development, aiming to breathe new life into the classic RPG’s world and action by reimagining it using boomer shooter aesthetics.
Polish developer Jonasz O. is steadily hacking away at Fallout 2’s 3D remake, which trades the original game’s top-down view for a first-person perspective that should be more familiar to fans of Bethesda’s more recent take on the series.
But while the shift to first-person might suggest an attempt to modernize the title, the project seems to remain decidedly retro and true to the original game, at least at this stage.
The pixelated graphics and sprites used to represent NPCs remind us of games like Duke Nukem, yet spending time with the project’s playable build reveals some very familiar mechanics.
Like the original, Fallout 2 3D Remake lets you pick between three starting characters before presenting you with a sheet, which you can use to distribute points across various stats and skills.
You’re thrust right into the middle of a post-apocalyptic settlement, equipped with several weapons, including a hammer, spear, minigun, and more.
Although you’re free to move around and explore, reloading and attacking costs action points, giving combat a dynamic that more closely resembles turn-based titles than FPS games released three decades ago.
The Fallout 2 3D Remake project is very much in its early stages but, if you’re curious to see how it plays – or missed out on the Classic Collection while it was free on the Epic Games Store – you can try out the latest early access alpha build over on itch.io.
There’s no word on when or if we can expect the project to be finished but, assuming it ever does and Bethesda doesn’t strike it down, it should provide an interesting new take on a game that’s left its mark on the RPG genre.
