Doom Eternal is way more badass than any of us would have imagined before the official reveal. Featuring the Doomguy - or rather, the 'Slayer' - the continuation of this ancient series looks like it's aiming for the absolute top percentage of the first-person shooter genre, which makes sense.
Set at least primarily on Earth, Doom Eternal will feature an odd offshoot of human society that's been taken over by the hordes of Hell. However, whereas the unleashing of Hell upon Earth had been a catastrophe for mankind, the Slayer's rampage is looking to be no less dangerous for demon-kind!
A double-barrel shotgun with an underslung grappling gun. A light machine gun with anti-materiel functionality. A cyclical scattershot rifle. There's also the shoulder-mounted rocket launcher/flamer, as well as an actual wristblade. Slayer has never had quite as many interesting tools at his disposal, honestly.
He'll need them, too, because the hellscapes of Earth are far more focused on verticality and tactical positioning than was the case with dark, damp, and tight hallways of Mars. The protagonist's movement capabilities will be appropriately enhanced, mind, with various evasive and offensive techniques to boot.
Of the many exciting things that have been showcased for Doom Eternal, one of the more interesting ones is the opt-in invasion system, where players will be able to 'invade' other Slayers by taking control over demons spawning during their sessions. There's no word yet on how exactly this will work, however.
