Project Athia was revealed last year as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, quickly catching everyone’s attention thanks to its stunning visuals. Otherwise shrouded in mystery, publisher Square Enix and developer Luminous Productions haven’t shared much about the game until later in 2021, when its final name – Forspoken – and the first details about its release date were revealed.
Alongside Forspoken’s release date, we also learned a bit more about what kind of a game it will be, the name of its protagonist, and got to see one of the imposing creatures that populate its world.
Forspoken is a “narrative-driven adventure” that follows Frey Holland, which the publisher describes as “an ordinary young woman who must harness her magical abilities to survive in a fantastical and dangerous land called Athia.”
The protagonist is played by Ella Balinska (Charlie’s Angels), who described the character as “real, she’s raw, she’s a girl who lost her way—both figuratively and literally—and is a character I immediately connected with.”
In the game’s newest trailer, it’s also revealed that she has some form of a companion with a male-sounding voice. Although not physically present in the gameplay footage shown, he seems to help Frey on her journey.
- Forspoken release date: January 24, 2023
Previous footage also shows her using magic powers, conjuring vines to subdue a wolf-like opponent. It’s currently unclear how big a part combat or magic plays in the game, but the title is listed as an action-RPG. We should learn more about how exactly it plays over the coming months.
Initially given a broad 2022 launch window, Forspoken’s release date was initially slated for May 24, 2022.
On March 7, the game was delayed until October 11. The developer said in a statement shared on Twitter that it will use the extra months to “focus all of our efforts on polishing the game.”
Later, on July 6, Forspoken’s release date was delayed yet again to January 24, 2023. The game is “in its final polishing phase,” according to the developer.
The title is being developed simultaneously for PC and PS5, according to the publisher, and you can check out its trailer below.
