11 bit Studios has confirmed that it is developing two new games in the Frostpunk franchise, with the first being an expanded and reimagined remaster of the original Frostpunk, built in Unreal Engine 5. It will be known as Frostpunk 1886.
“11 bit studios is proud to draw back the curtain and present the first glimmer of a brand-new title in the Frostpunk franchise; a project that revisits and expands upon the beloved city-builder and society survival experience of the original Frostpunk.” said 11 bit Studios in a statement sent to us today.
What’s the Frostpunk 1886 Release Date?
Frostpunk 1886 is set for release in 2027 and will turn away from the Liquid Engine, which powered the original and This War of Mine, as the team looks to the Unreal Engine to build a new “foundation to carry forward the legacy of the first game.”
Development on Frostpunk 2 will continue, with plans for DLC and console releases on the 2025 roadmap.
“Reimagining Frostpunk in Unreal Engine also allows the game to become a living, expandable platform, bringing with it long-awaited mod support—a community request that was previously impossible to realize due to technical limitations of the original engine—as well as the possibility to add future DLC content.”
Development began on Frostpunk 1886 early this year, so it will probably be a little while before we hear anything else about it, as there aren’t even any screenshots of it yet.
“Frostpunk 1886 builds upon the core of the original, expanding it with new content, mechanics, laws, and—perhaps most excitingly—an entirely new Purpose path, offering a fresh experience even for the most seasoned players.”
Frostpunk 1886 has been confirmed for PC via Steam, but we also expect it to be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S at a later date. This wasn’t mentioned in the press release, but the original is available on those platforms. We have reached out for clarification and will update in due course.
