Games Done Quick has previously avoided any sort of MMO speedruns, but this is set to change with their first Destiny 2 Raid Speedrun, which is coming up sometime in 2020. Players who have signed up for this speedrun will attempt to do one of the most difficult Destiny 2 Raids, the Last Wish.
The Last Wish features a number of complex encounters that the team aims to clear as quickly as possible. It’s interesting that Destiny 2 - a borderline MMO - is the first game of its kind that GDQ has cleared for a speedrun, instead of something more traditional like World of Warcraft.
The Last Wish GDQ Speedrun
According to one of the players who will attempting this Last Wish GDQ speedrun, organising this event wasn’t simple: “It definitely required several hours of talking and planning with the staff. It’s something they have wanted to do ( an mmo run ) but it required a lot of setup and interaction to get working correctly,” they said.
As for GDQ’s reasoning to make Destiny 2 the first MMO to enter the speedrunning competition, it is likely to be due to its dynamic nature: “Destiny is also the perfect MMO Hybrid to get people interested in since it’s an action shooter game,” said the player in question.
While each and every Last Wish encounter is exciting on its own, the final Riven Ahamkara fight will undoubtedly draw the most attention. Speedrunners have mentioned that their first idea idea was to do the fight by cheesing the boss, though they may yet attempt to finish it legitimately: “Maybe we’ll do an incentive for legit. We haven’t decided.”
So far, responses have been quite positive, and the community seems to be looking forward to this speedrunning attempt. Stay tuned for more information as we get it.
