Gears Tactics’ announcement came out of nowhere during E3 2018, surprising fans as it sees the series stepping away from the third-person shooter genre.
Instead, Gears Tactics aims to put its own brand of brutality in a turn-based strategy context while retaining many of the elements that make the series recognizable to so many gamers. Here’s everything we know about Gears Tactics, including details about its release date, gameplay, and story.
Gears Tactics Release Date
Developed by Splash Damage and The Coalition, Gears Tactics’ release date was officially revealed during The Game Awards 2019, where a new trailer for the upcoming title was premiered.
Eager players will get to snuff out more Locust on April 28, when Gears Tactics is set to launch on both PC and Xbox One.
Gears Tactics Story
Gears Tactics’ story takes place 12 whole years before the events of the first Gears of War title, on the Planet Sera as cities being to fall to the Locust Threat.
It will feature a brand new squad led by Gabe Diaz tasked with hunting down Ukkon, a Locust monster maker responsible for the destruction of entire cities.
Gears Tactics Gameplay
As far as gameplay goes, Gears of War does share certain similarities with XCOM, while putting in the effort to shake up the recipe with some elements of its own.
The title will feature ruthless tactical turn-based combat that can pit players against more than 15 Locust at one time. Each character gets three actions during its turn, which it can use in any given order, increasing the number of tactical possibilities.
Gears Tactics features free movement, not locking units down to rigid squares or hexes. The distance your units can traverse is dictated by how many of its actions you want to reserve for moving, this system allowing for more finesse when setting up flanking maneuvers.
Not only that but characters running towards into cover can slide into it, slightly extending their movement distance. Gears Tactics will also feature Overwatch, which lets units monitor an area and fire at any enemies moving through it during the opponent’s turn.
Players can customize their squad members, choosing between 5 different classes and over 30 Skills each that can be mixed and matched.
Whenever a unit’s health is depleted, it has a chance of entering a downed state. In this state, players can move their units in to perform gruesome Executions, turning the downed opponents into giblets.
Aside from being outright badass, Executions also reward you squad members with one extra action. Executions can also be chained, being able to stack extra actions that let you squad devastate the opposition.
Gears Tactics will throw a variety of Locust at you, from strong Drones to giant bosses. In a nudge at the main entries in the series, players can zoom in on squad members and manually target shots.
Where can you buy Gears Tactics and how much does it cost?

Players opting for the Steam version will have to pay 69,99€ or their regional equivalent, while the Microsoft Store version is cheaper, costing $59.99 + applicable taxes.
