Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Frontline is the newest entry in Ubisoft’s long-running series of military shooters, the publisher revealed during yesterday’s Ghost Recon 20th Anniversary Showcase.
Signaling Ubisoft’s intention to expand into the free-to-play space, Ghost Recon Frontline will not a require a traditional purchase, puts PvP at the forefront, while also making the move to a first-person perspective.
Ghost Recon Frontline’s flagship mode is called Expedition and aims to offer “a new take on the battle royale genre.” Matches take place on the expansive open world of Drakemoor island, tasking players with completing dynamic objectives instead of evading an ever-encroaching circle of death.
The mode supports more than 100 players which you’ll be competing against as you fight to gather intel. Once you’ve collected all the intel you need, you can call in extraction, but the process takes a while to complete and also alerts the other players to your location. Should they stop you from extracting, they can then take the intel you gathered and use it themselves.
Although Expedition leads the charge, more modes will be added across new seasons, catering to players looking for quicker matches, something closer to a traditional arena shooter experience, or just a place to test out new loadouts.
Three playable and customizable classes were revealed, with more to come in the lead-up to launch. Here’s how they’re described in an emailed press release:
- Assault Class provides great sustainability in close range fights and overall proficiency manoeuvres.
- Support Class offers superior protection with fortification abilities.
- Scout Class can easily recon the area for the squad, revealing and pestering enemies from a distance without fear of retaliation.
Ghost Recon Frontline’s first closed test kicks off later this month, on October 14, and will be available for PC players in Europe. You can register on the publisher’s website for a chance to get in.
In addition, the original Ghost Recon game is free to claim on Ubisoft Connect, while Wildlands’ Fallen Ghost DLC and Breakpoint’s Deep State Adventure DLC are both free to access across all platforms, as long as you own the base games.
Ghost Recon Frontline doesn’t yet have a release date but will be available on PC, exclusively through Ubisoft Connect, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Google Stadia, and Amazon Luna.
