Terms like “turn-based tactical RPG” and “roguelike” can be daunting for many. Well Dimensionals from developer Mino Games is a tactical turn-based roguelike RPG with rock-hard bosses and a more or less infinite array of tactical possibilities.
Yet it can be enjoyed by any gamer.
This is in part because of its gloriously authentic Saturday morning cartoon style. Dimensionals follows the adventures of a brave young multiverse-hopping hero who steps up following an apocalyptic multidimensional attack by the King of Specters.
Over the course of a sprawling, episodic campaign this hero has to travel between dimensions rescuing stranded allies in order to create a diverse army of heroes who all share one important feature in common: MAJOR beef with the King of Specters.
We think Dimensionals sounds like one of the most promising indie games of 2024, and you’ll be able to see for yourself when Mino Games holds a Steam playtest from July 10th.
So let’s get down to brass tacks: Dimensionals is a RPG with roguelike elements. It sees you recruiting a stable of heroes, combining them in teams, and equipping them with a choice of well over 300 different skill cards.
You don’t need to be a math whizz to know that the number of potential combinations is astronomical.
Each battle involves a different set of challenges, giving Dimensionals an almost puzzle-like feel. To get past the toughest enemies, you’ll need to have a good idea of your heroes’ capabilities and how they complement each other.
And you’ll need to be able to adapt, since skills cards are dealt randomly. Each roguelike run sees you holding a different deck.
While Dimensionals is an approachable RPG, it’s still a challenging title. For instance, there’s the Master Raid mode, which involves taking on terrifying bosses in classic turn-based RPG style.
This impressive package is wrapped up with fun, cartoony visuals, comic book cutscenes, and a musical score composed by Brad Breeck, who wrote the tunes for Disney’s Gravity Falls.
