Fallout London, an ambitious, massive total conversion mod for Fallout 4, is finally here after some current-gen-upgrade-related delays. For the most part, Team FOLON has knocked it out of the park, but like with most gargantuan Fallout mods, crashes can be frequent and quite annoying. This is how you can quickly fix an early one that’s been giving folks a bit of a headache for the past few days.
After you’ve gone through the official installation instructions (we highly recommend the GOG option), you should load into Fallout London with no problems. However, chances are you might encounter some instability and crashes. An especially problematic section involves a train early on, but alas, you might be affected by CTDs later into the mod as well.
According to reports on Reddit and the Steam forums, the crashes are mostly related to the usual Creation Engine wobbliness we hate so much and comes as a byproduct of it being such a flexible and easy-to-use engine. Graphical load might play a part in all this, as some users report that lowering the graphical settings from Ultra to High or avoiding alt-tabbing helps. That said, the most helpful fix so far appears to be using an entirely different Fallout 4 mod as a crutch of sorts. Here are the details:
- Go to Nexus Mods and download Buffout 4 (single file, the rest is already included in Fallout London).
- Extract the zip file inside a different folder outside of Fallout London’s (some users have reported errors while extracting directly into the folder).
- Look for the F4SE folder within your Fallout 4 install (whether it’s within GOG or Steam’s folders). It’ll be located inside the Data folder.
- Overwrite the F4SE folder of the Fallout 4 install with the one found inside the Buffout 4 zip that you’ve extracted elsewhere.
- Go into the Fallout 4 folder and looks for f4se_loader.exe. Run the game/mod as administrator through this executable to ensure Buffout 4 is activated.
If you’ve done everything correctly, this should help you get through the troubled train section without crashing and might help with later instability moments too. That said, fully expect Fallout London to remain a bumpy ride despite everything awesome it offers, as Bethesda games using huge mods such as this one traditionally aren’t super smooth, at least not until more mod patches have arrived.
