GOG has a big celebration going on as part of their 10th anniversary, and some new games are part of that celebration. The highlight is Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, previously a lost Indiana Jones game from LucasArts, which has just been released digitally for the first time.
The game was originally released in 1999 and is the more Tomb Raider-style semi-sequel to Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, from many of the same team. Due to a bizarre console release and poor compatibility with pretty much any PC released in over 10 years, Infernal Machine became something of a lost game - which has now at last been rediscovered, thanks to GOG.
After LucasArts cancelled several adventure game Indiana Jones titles, the Fate of Atlantis team started working on a game to outdo the current action-adventure champion, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Infernal Machine had poor combat and was a little slow in parts, but the puzzles were excellent, the setpieces were fun, the levels were well-designed, and there was a sense of freedom to the game that was almost Legend of Zelda-like.
The story is set after World War Two, and the Soviets have seemingly discovered the remains of the legendary Tower of Babel. Indiana Jones is hired by Fate of Atlantis' Sophia Hapgood, now working for the CIA, to investigate if something sinister was buried beneath the Tower - as the Soviets believe. The story actually has some good twists, and a number of its elements inspired parts of the fourth Indiana Jones movie Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (for better or worse) - such as using the Soviets instead of Nazis, Sophia Hapgood's odd new haircut, and basically the ending.
You can pick the game up now. Infernal Machine completes the "main" Indiana Jones videogame saga on PC on GOG, from Last Crusade to Emperor's Tomb. Only Staff of Kings is missing, but that was console-only (and terrible).
GOG's 10th anniversary sale is in full swing with lots of deals, and other new games include the surprisingly good Soldier of Fortune games by Singularity developer Raven, and Stellaris. GOG will also be giving away, for free, one of three games - Shadow Warrior 2, Firewatch, or Superhot. You can vote for which on the site.
