Last month, publisher and developer NeocoreGames announced King Arthur: Knight’s Tale as its next dark fantasy turn-based RPG.
Since then, the studio has also begun sharing more details about its newest project, including a first taste of how much of an influence the King Arthur: Knight’s Tale Morality Chart will have on gameplay.
As you play through the game’s campaign, you’ll inevitably have to make tough decisions that will alter your character’s position on the Morality Chart.
King Arthur: Knight's Tale Morality Chart
Where one axis represents Rightfulness and Tyranny, the other stands for Old Faith and Christianity.
“Let’s say there’s a plague! What would you do? Sure, you can burn down every local building to stop its spread… but you can send in a healer as well. Riskier, but more humane! Or, let’s say you happen upon a group of bandits harassing a merchant. You can deal with the robbers and let the merchant determine your reward, or… if you’re in need, you can just take everything. So how do you decide? Tough questions!” the developer wrote in a Kickstarter post.
Your position on the King Arthur: Knight’s Tale Morality Chart can affect which heroes you’re able to recruit into your party.
Morgan LeFay, for example, won’t be too keen on fighting alongside you if you’re not an adherent of the Old Faith.
Your heroes also have abilities tied to their own morality, gaining bonuses and even new abilities when fighting alongside others who see things in a similar way.
Lastly, it also determines which approach you can take while managing your kingdom.
Where a tyrant is more prone to just demand tribute when their coffers run dry, a righteous ruler will turn to laws that refill them over a longer period of time.
In a separate Kickstarter post, Producer Zoltán Pozsonyi revealed that the studio is “confident that we can pull this off”, when discussing how the game departs from Neocore’s usual action-RPG fare.
“Our main principle is not to mix in a 50-50 ratio, this way we can avoid compromises. With King Arthur: Knight’s Tale our approach is that we consider it a full-blown fantasy tactical game, so no compromises there. RPG features are only added to enhance, to expand on that core idea, never to take away from it. The mixing of genres isn’t the most challenging task here, but the mixing of narrative and rogue-lite features.” he said.
“Our solution is to separate the campaign from the endgame chapter, as the toughest challenges will be introduced in the endgame. For this endgame portion, the question isn’t if it’s challenging enough, but how many tries will it take, how far will you be able to go?”
King Arthur: Knight’s Tale is currently aiming for a Q1 2021 release on PC, via Steam, PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Its Kickstarter campaign has already secured 91% of the required funding, with 9 more days left to contribute.
Aside from its turn-based tactical RPG, NeocoreGames is also working on “a bigger Action-RPG” whose release “is very far away.”
