Publisher MicroProse and developer White Pond Games have announced Urban Strife as their next project that’s set to launch next year.
A turn-based tactical RPG that takes place in a zombie-infested city from “somewhere in backwater south of USA”, Urban Strife sees the player starting out as an amnesiac rescued by people from a local shelter.
From there, you work your way up to the role of leader by pushing back the undead tide, maintaining your shelter and negotiating with factions.
MicroProse Announces Tactical RPG Urban Strife
Taking inspiration from Jagged Alliance 2, Urban Strife’s turn-based battles are based around an action points system “with consecutive turns & interrupts based on skills.”
Its zombies get a bit of a special treatment, having assigned a special turn with simultaneous movement that lets them take individual decisions on what the best approach to feasting on player brains might be.
To counter them, Urban Strife equips you with an arsenal of weapons spread across several classes.
Where the pistol’s low AP cost lets them deal cumulative damage, shotguns not only excel when fighting up close but also have individual pellet damage.
All weapons have “real ballistic calculations with variable penetration” and can induce blood loss which drains the life out of anyone who’s still worried about that kind of thing.
You can also precisely target specific limbs, potentially crippling opponents.
As you explore Urban Strife’s ravaged world, you’ll scavenge resources which you can use to repair the shelter that acts as your base. This, in turn, unlocks various upgrades.
Out there, you’ll find others trying to survive in the game’s harsh landscape. Some have banded together, forming three factions that you can enlist as allies.
Urban Strife is set to launch at some point in Q3 2021 but, according to the publisher, “players will have the chance to taste Urban Strife gameplay way sooner than that.” You can check the game out on Steam and in the trailer below.
