Factions are a big part of New World and, as you complete missions for the Syndicate, you’ll soon reach a point where your reputation will be gated by the Trial of the Scrivener quest. Heading to its location and completing the task you’re given are required if you’re looking to move to the faction’s second rank and unlock new rewards.
The location from where you pick up New World’s Trial of the Scrivener quest waits inside the settlement of Brightwatch, which is found in the territory of Brightwood. If you haven’t visited it yet, you’re probably in for a bit of a walk.
Once inside, speak to Laurentius Krockes. Essentially, New World’s Trial of the Scrivener quest sends you to the graveyard at Walsham’s Field, found south of where you currently are, and asks you to capture Soul Traces from lost Gheist Malikor.
You can walk all the way to Walsham (the marker on the map will guide you), or fast travel to Shadowmine Shrine in Everfall if you have it unlocked. One thing to note is that you currently need to be level 24 to start the quest, which makes sense after you meet the undead patrolling around Walsham.
As you near the location of the quest marker, interact with the blue glowing shape on the ground to place the Trace Absorber. If Gheist Malikor hasn’t spawned, you’ll need to wait a minute or two before engaging him.
You can solo the boss at level 24, but it will be a bit challenging, since he does hit fairly hard and has a relatively high attack speed. Teaming up with other players will make the quest easier.
After killing Malikor, the next step to completing New World’s Trial of the Scrivener quest and earning its rewards involves going back to the location where you placed the Trace Absorber and collecting it. Once you’ve done so, head back to Brightwatch and talk to Laurentius Krockes to complete the quest.
This sees you ranking up to Scrivener, which unlocks a new tier of rewards you can purchase from the faction’s representatives across Aeternum, while letting you gain more reputation with the Syndicate.
