If there’s one truth about Online Multiplayer games, it’s that there will be nerfs, and if there are two truths about them, it’s that there will be plenty of people who get annoyed by said nerfs, and sometimes with good reason.
Take Amazon’s MMO New World for example. Still wet behind the ears but with a significant player base, there’s naturally been a few wrinkles that needed ironing out from launch. One such wrinkle was how New World’s XP was earned and to what degree.
Previously it was a little too easy to make massive progress toward the highest player levels. Obviously, you don’t want players rinsing through your MMO too quickly, so an adjustment is necessary. Unfortunately, some players are finding New World’s progression is now aggravatingly slow.
New World XP Nerfed
On the Subreddit for the MMO, a player posted a thread to vent about how unfair XP progression has become. The thread title and accompanying image paint quite the picture:
“XP nerf has killed this game’s progression for me. Level 118 engineers crafted over 160 wyrdwood poles and only got to level 140. Over 25+ hours of farming mats, and sinking 4K+ gold into taxes..this is a huge slap in the face and needs to be addressed.”
The replies to the thread largely agree with the OP on this, citing how unfair it is that early adopters with enough time on their hands were able to rush to level 200 in a ridiculously quick fashion while now it feels like a heavy, somewhat fruitless, grind, even for an MMO.
There’s also complaints about how inefficient the low level crafting is for the game itself as well as for progression.
Time will tell how Amazon chooses to approach any future progression updates, but any action needs to be relatively swift because nothing will kill off the interest of an active player base quite as fast as a laborious, all-consuming grind.
