How do you use the Smudge Stick in Phasmophobia? What does it do and why should you consider taking it with you on hunts?
The Phasmophobia Smudge Stick is one of several equipment types you can take with you prior to starting a ghost hunt. While others aid you in uncovering more about your target, this item’s purpose is to keep you safe.
How to Use Smudge Stick in Phasmophobia
Essentially, the Smudge Stick serves two roles. On the one hand, it’s able to delay the ghost from entering hunt mode, giving you additional time to explore the location and learn more about the foe. This only applies when the ghost hasn’t yet entered hunt mode.
On the other hand, it can save your skin once you’ve angered the ghost enough for it to hunt you. Using Phasmophobia’s Smudge stick when you’re being chased will distract the foe for a while, giving you a brief window to break line of sight and seek out a place to hide.
In both scenarios, the process of igniting Smudge Sticks requires the use of a lighter and can be accomplished in two steps. First, equip your lighter, then proceed to equip the Smudge Stick. Once both are in hand, press the secondary button (default F) to light the Smudge Stick.
Alternatively, you can throw a stick on the ground, light your lighter, then pick up the Smudge Stick. It should automatically end up ignited. In both cases, you’ll want to do so when you’re near the ghost’s location.
It’s worth keeping in mind that these are items that only have one use and which take a few seconds to burn. Especially when you’re being hunted, you’ll want to time using them right.
Thankfully, Phasmophobia allows you to equip up to four Smudge Sticks. For more help with the co-op horror game, check out our guides on using the Crucifix and Spirit Box.
