How do you use the Spirit Box in Phasmophobia? Phasmophobia lets you take different types of equipment before setting off on a hunt, and the Spirit Box counts among the available choices, but what’s the best way to use it?
In Phasmophobia, you can employ specific Spirit Box phrases to communicate with ghosts on PC, allowing you to gather evidence and gain insights into the spectral adversary you’re facing.
On consoles, the interaction with ghosts is slightly different due to technical limitations that prevent the ghosts from hearing player voices. Kinetic Games is planning to address this issue with future patches. In the meantime, they have implemented button prompts that enable players to communicate with ghosts on console platforms.
- Are you Friendly?
- Where are you?
- How old are you?
When using the Spirit Box on consoles, be aware that you cannot move. This can be particularly risky during hunts if you inadvertently switch to it while trying to escape a ghost chase. Be cautious when scrolling through your inventory in panic mode.
How to use the Spirit Box in Phasmophobia
Kinetic Games implemented several changes to the Spirit Box with the Progression 2.0 update, including the introduction of a new tier system. This system enables players to buy new equipment that levels up as they advance in the game and earn more money.
To get the best use of the Spirit Box in Phasmophobia, place it in the room where the ghost is active, turn off the lights, and then ask questions aloud on PC or use the prompts on consoles. This setup increases your chances of receiving responses from the ghost, but remember that you will only hear a response if the ghost on your map is one of the following:
- Spirit
- Yokai
- Wraith
- Phantom
- Poltergeist
- Onryo
- The Twins
- Mare
- The Mimic
- Moroi
- Deogen

Some ghosts will be more prone to answer your questions than others and, as difficulty increases, you’ll have a harder time getting them to talk.
As the game is in Early Access, Phasmophobia Spirit Box phrases can yield inconsistent results and be affected by broader voice issues. This has greatly improved with additional updates, and we rarely seem to run into problems on PC at least. The consoles just came out so we haven’t played it too much yet.
The Spirit Box can prove to be quite a handy tool for finding the ghost’s room. For more help with Phasmophobia, check out our guides on how to use the Ouija Board and Crucifix.
