Sony has unveiled the PSVR 2 as its next-gen virtual reality headset during its CES 2022 press conference. Although the medium hasn’t quite escaped its niche appeal, seasoned users and those curious about it might be wondering whether or not it will work on PC.
While the company did reveal that headset feedback, eye tracking, and 3D Audio, join the PS VR2 Sense controllers’ haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in an effort to increase player immersion, it did not address the subject of whether or not PS VR2 will work on PC, for some fairly obvious reasons. In fact, it didn’t even reveal how the headset looks like just yet.
Based on how its previous iteration interacted with other platforms, we’re led to believe that the PS VR2 will not work on PC straight out of the box. The headset’s original version was built with Sony’s console in mind and this will likely extend to its second iteration, which will usher in a new generation of virtual reality games.
That being said, players have managed to get PS VR to work on PC through the aid of third-party software like Trinus PSVR, although this approach comes with its own caveats. Given how it’s not an official Sony product, interaction with Steam VR has its limitations and you won’t get room scaling support.
Even if third-party software will enable PS VR2 to work on PC, it will likely only feature partial support. This, of course, remains speculation until Sony shares more details about its upcoming virtual reality headset which currently doesn’t have a release date. We’ll update this article as soon as we learn more.
