Although receiving critical acclaim, the launch of Sony’s PSVR 2 has been somewhat subdued compared to the company’s typically high standards.
Initial figures reported by Bloomberg following the VR hardware’s February 22 launch reveal a relatively modest 270,000 units sold during its opening 5 weeks.
Modest Start, but Is It All Doom and Gloom for Sony's Latest VR Hardware?
The company had produced 2 million units for launch, so this is a pretty slow start that could hurt PSVR 2’s chances of growth going forward.
However, it has to be noted that PSVR 2 didn’t have a wide launch as it was largely reserved for the PlayStation online store. As such, it wasn’t quite the Wild West launch of PS5 that saw scalpers gobble up consoles to sell for high markups. So it may not be as doom and gloom as it appears.
It may well force Sony to cut the price of the PSVR 2 unit though. While it’s priced reasonably when comparing the market, it still currently retails for a higher price than the PS5 console needed to use it.
