Resident Evil 2 Remake is out soon, you may have played the exciting one-shot demo and are hyped for the final product, but one question remains - is it single-player only? Are there Resident Evil 2 Remake Multiplayer modes?
This question has been further muddied by the reveal of unlockable modes for completing the game, including one called "Rogue Mode". Is Rogue Mode a co-op or multiplayer mode? Is there something like The Mercenaries mode? Is there any sort of Resident Evil 2 co-op? We'll do our best to answer.
Is there a Resident Evil 2 Remake Co-op or Multiplayer Mode?
With the co-op focused Resident Evil 5 the best-selling game in the series, and the most recent third-person game in the series Resident Evil Revelations 2 also boasting co-op, it's more than possible that a number of players probably hoped that Resident Evil 2 Remake would have a similar co-op mode - even as an unlockable. There are two characters, after all.
Unfortunately, the main campaign is entirely single-player, and those two characters barely meet during the entirety of it (at least if Remake plays out similarly to the original). Steam also makes it clear that the game is single-player only and has no online play. They have to state these things.
But what about Rogue Mode? This was leaked on ResetEra but we have no idea what it is - although datamining the Resident Evil 2 Remake demo reveals that it tracks enemy kills, result screens, and even has a shop. However, it's probably most likely that Rogue Mode is either a New Game Plus or a type of Survival mode, where players have to get through the game as quickly as possible with the bare minimum of resources. It could be the Remake's version of either Extreme Battle or Nightmare modes, which were in ports of the original Resident Evil 2.
The one thing Rogue Mode probably doesn't have is co-op or multiplayer. We don't know for certain of course, but if there is a co-op mode, it probably isn't online - it'd have to be local split-screen, and that might not be on PC at all. Guess we'll find out next week when Resident Evil 2 Remake launches on January 25 - but don't get your hopes up for multiplayer.
