Slitherine and Volmi have announced that it’s co-developing a fantasy turn-based strategy adaptation of the hit tabletop RPG RuneQuest. It will be released for PC in 2025.
RuneQuest: Warlords will feature turn-based tactical battles set in the fantasy world of Glorantha. While it’s certainly not a full RPG, Slitherine says it deeply reflects the tabletop game’s legacy. It’s using a customised version of the engine behind Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector.
“We’re incredibly excited to develop RuneQuest: Warlords with Volmi and Chaosium We’re confident that the millions of RuneQuest tabletop fans will find in Warlords a natural evolution into PC strategy gaming. At the same time, countless strategy enthusiasts will discover the deeply nuanced system of RuneQuest through our video game,” said Giulia Sellitto, Marketing Manager at Slitherine.
“We are thrilled and honored to bring the legendary RuneQuest world from the tabletop to the video game realm! Our team has poured passion and creativity into this project, and we can’t wait for both longtime fans and new players to dive into the adventure. Collaborating closely with Slitherine and Chaosium has been an incredible journey, and we hope you enjoy playing it as much as we loved creating it!” said Nataliia Pravdiuk, Game Producer at Volmi - a Virtuos Studio.
Here’s an overview provided by Slitherine:
A Battle for Survival. Players will take command of the Talastar tribes, stepping into the role of warlords leading them through a gripping 18-mission single-player campaign. They will fight for survival against the relentless Chaos hordes, encountering iconic characters from the RuneQuest universe such as Ketill White Eye, Hakon the Swimmer, Wovandor, and Ralzakark.
Swords, Runes, and Sorcery. The powerful spells of the Stormwalkers and the feral mounted charges of the Shadow Cats will determine the fate of the regions around the Sramake River, west of the famed Dragon Pass. The three factions in RuneQuest: Warlords - the Talastar, the Chaos Hordes, and the Lunar Empire - each offer unique strengths and distinct playstyles, with specialized and highly thematic units.
Little information has been provided about multiplayer modes, but we expect to learn more as the release date approaches. However, it is known that there will be Skirmish modes and Multiplayer arenas for player-versus-player matches.
RuneQuest: Warlords is available to wishlist on Steam.
