Publisher Stardock Entertainment and developer Ironclad Games have announced that Sins of a Solar Empire 2’s early access phase kicks off today with a technical preview that shows off one of the strategy game’s playable factions alongside a handful of new gameplay elements.
Sins of a Solar Empire 2’s technical preview runs on the new Iron Engine, allowing players to try out “a map where phase lanes adjust as planets orbit, closing doors to some opportunities while opening windows to others as the game progresses.”

Also included in it are new turret weapons that “track targets along firing arcs, simulating realistic limitations to fields of fire,” alongside a first look at diplomacy and interacting with neutral NPCs that may end up being either friend or foe.
Planetary development will also be showcased, giving players a taste of how Sins of a Solar Empire II handles specializing planets in areas such as research, ship construction, or mining.
Sins of a Solar Empire II’s technical preview is just the first phase of its early access program, which players can access by pre-ordering the game on the Epic Games Store.
During it, the developer will focus on “foundational elements” and trying out new ideas while listening to fan feedback.
Phase 2 brings with it multiplayer alongside two new factions – the Vasari and Advent. Lastly, phase 3 is all about “polish, balance, fixing exploits, and visual fidelity enhancements.”
Although the long-awaited sequel’s full version doesn’t have a release date yet, it’s safe to say that we won’t see it arriving this year.
