Skull and Bones is finally ready to put you in the shoes of a pirate looking to plunder the Indian Ocean’s riches and sink rival vessels but, while the allure of staying a lone wolf might be strong, co-operating with others in multiplayer could make your life on the high seas a little easier.
In case anyone still has doubts, yes, there is multiplayer in Skull and Bones and it’s an important part of the game that you may, sooner or later, want to try out.
Skull and Bones Multiplayer and Co-op
During Skull and Bones’ re-reveal, Game Director Ryan Barnard noted that while everything in it can be played through without partying up, “at [its] core, [Skull and Bones] is a social game.”
He continued by saying that the dev team “looks at everything through the lens of co-op,” making it the best way to experience the life of a pirate.
This means that engaging with Skull and Bones’ co-op component will make activities like taking on dangerous privateers and attacking forts both more rewarding and easier.
Having a friend or two watching your back gives you more eyes to watch the horizon for reinforcements and cannons to fire at them.
The game’s approach to ships also plays into this, allowing players to customize weapons and armor and have them fulfilling different roles, including ones of support, where repair weapons can patch up allies without needing to return to a pirate den.
Skull and Bones multiplayer’ allows you to team up with up to two other players both to explore its world and partake in PvE activities but also engage in PvP. The latter is opt-in, meaning that you can decide whether or not you want to join a server that has it enabled.
If you’re daring enough, you’ll be able to attack and be attacked by other players while out at sea. You can put your skills to the test in fair fights, potentially take advantage of ongoing battles to score extra loot, but also get ambushed while you’re plundering targets.
Aside from decking out your ships to synergize with your Skull and Bones co-op partners, you can also mark targets on the map so that the whole party can move together.
According to the game’s PlayStation Store listing, the game supports up to 20 players, although the publisher has yet to confirm the number.
We’ll likely hear more about Skull and Bones multiplayer and co-op components in the lead-up to launch. For more help with the game, here’s what you should know about crossplay and infamy.
