With Summer Game Fest right around the corner, Square Enix has recently teased that a new Just Cause is in production. The Just Cause franchise is developed by Avalanche Studios and the most recent entry in the series, Just Cause 4, was released in December 2018.
After selling most of its western IPs to Embracer Group, you could be forgiven for thinking that Square Enix had forgotten about Just Cause. However, there is hope.
Could it be Just Cause 5?
A few hours ago, Square Enix disclosed its investor briefing for the fiscal year to the public (thank you ResetEra). Chief accounting officer Atsushi Matsuda and president Yosuke Matsuda review Square Enix’s financial revenue within the document, saying that “the Just Cause franchise will remain our IP” and that it’s “at work developing a new title in the franchise”.
Not to get ahead of ourselves, we do not know what Atsushi Matsuda and Yosuke Matsuda were referring to with this very brief statement. This new addition could easily be Just Cause Mobile, a title that was shown at the 2020 Game Awards. In 2021, Square Enix announced a delay to Just Cause Mobile, and according to the official Just Cause Mobile Twitter account, we would not hear anything more until this year.
Just Cause is an action-adventure franchise where players fight through tornadoes, massive helicopters, sandstorms, and nuclear missiles while completing missions. Burning rubber and detonating grenades, this open-world franchise is all guns and grit. It is highly praised for the intensity that is mass-destruction and mayhem. After Just Cause 4 in 2018, the series has been quiet with the exception of the mobile announcement.
The Summer Game Fest officially starts on June 9th, 2022. There will be many game announcements within the entirety of the event, and with the news from Square Enix’s investment briefing, perhaps there’s a chance we’ll see Just Cause 5 at the show.
