As it enters its eight year of post-launch support, Stellaris’ is looking towards the 3.9 Caelum update release date, which is set to bring with it the next set of important changes to Paradox’s sci-fi grand strategy game.
Stellaris’ patch 3.9 is a product of the Custodian initiative, whose establishment saw the grand strategy game’s development team split into two.

One half focuses on paid expansion content, while another hacks away at ensuing free patches release every 3 months or so.
This is useful when trying to determine the update’s release date, even before Paradox announces it. The Gemini update went live in the first half of May 2023.
We expected the Caelum update 3.9 to arrive at some point in fall 2023 and the developer confirmed that to be the case.
In early September 2023, Stellaris 3.9 update’s release date was narrowed down to the week of September 11, “if everything goes according to plan.”
Everything did go according to plan, with the patch going live on September 12.

This longer wait comes as a result of Paradox usually winding down for the summer, as employees go on holiday.
In terms of content, we can expect additional “changes to leader traits and some of the mechanics surrounding them,” alongside tweaks to Species Packs and various additions that are detailed in the full patch notes linked above.
