Five years on, Stellaris continues to grow through both paid expansions and free patches, its Lem 3.1 update bringing the first set of notable changes following the release of its paid Nemesis DLC earlier this year. The update’s release date is one thing the community has on its mind, especially with content cadence slowing down as compared to that of previous years.
Stellaris’ Lem 3.1 Update initially received a release window set for “sometime after summer” at the same time as Paradox announced the Custodians initiative that split the development team into two. Going forward, one team will focus on expansion content, while another will work on delivering free patches “every 3 months.”
Stellaris 3.1 update is named after Polish sci-fi author Stanislaw Lem – continuing a tradition that has been around pretty much since launch – and “will be a bit more ambitious and larger in scope compared to what you can come to expect from ‘Custodian’ updates in the future,” the developer noted back in June.
“The reason is that we’ve had a longer time to work on it than what is planned for future updates. It’s also important to note that as of now, the Lem update is scheduled to be a standalone free update, and will not be associated with a paid DLC.”
After a suspenseful couple of weeks, Stellaris’ Lem 3.1 Update release date has been locked down to September 14, Paradox has confirmed.

Paradox has previously pointed out that the slower pace at which it releases content is a result of the ongoing pandemic, so it’s not entirely outside the realm of possibility for the update to get delayed.
Stellaris’ Lem Update introduces selectable traditions removing their hardlocked state but also introduces new ones for the base game, Nemesis and Apocalypse DLCs. Certain Civics and Origins have been rebalanced and restructured, while the Plantoids, Humanoids, and Necroids Species Packs all have new content to play through.
