System Shock 3 is happening, and it’s being developed by Warren Spector’s Otherside Entertainment. While the talent is all there, Spector did suggest that they’re working with a smaller budget than might be ideal for this type of project.
Warren Spector is a legendary game director who coined the term ‘Immersive Sim’, and who worked on Deus Ex, System Shock, and Thief. Since he’s gone indie, he’s working with less resources. While System Shock 3 itself may have an AA budget, the team is working hard to deliver an AAA experience.
“I feel more pressure on this project than I think I have on any other,” said Spector in a recent interview. “Even working with Mickey Mouse, I knew we could do the job, and I knew we had the budget and the team to live up to people’s expectations. Here, we really are in this sort of “AA” space, not the AAA space.”
Spector also said that he and his business partner, Paul Neurath, did wish to make a smaller-scale project before, while they were still working within the confines of triple-A game development, but that the expectations for System Shock 3 remain as high as ever.
“I think if you ask my team, I think you’d hear that I’m pushing them pretty hard for AAA quality at the AA price tag,” he said. “There are expectations with the scope of the game and the legacy of the original games. So yeah, there’s some pressure. You bet.”
