UPDATE JANUARY 25, 2023: The Lord of the Rings: Gollum release date slated to occur during the first half of publisher Nacon’s next fiscal year.
UPDATE JULY 25, 2022: The Lord of the Rings: Gollum release date delayed “by a few months.”
Co-publishers Daedalic Entertainment and Nacon previously announced that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum had finally locked down its release date to the beginning of September.
The story-driven stealth adventure was delayed at the start of 2021, giving the team behind it more time to ensure it lives up to fans’ expectations.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Release Date
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’s release date was then set to occur on September 1, 2022, the game releasing on PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, and PS4. A Nintendo Switch version was also planned to come out later this year.
On July 25, 2022, Daedalic Entertainment provided an update revealing that the game had been pushed back “by a few months.”
An exact release date is coming “in the near future,” although it’s unclear if or how the Switch version is affected.
The title explores Gollum’s behind-the-scenes experiences in the first chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring. With the ring lost to Bilbo Baggins, he leaves the Misty Mountains and sets off on a journey that takes him from the dungeons of Barad-dûr to Mirkwood.
“In order to survive the dangers of his journey through Middle-earth, Gollum has to sneak and climb and use all his cunning,” reads an emailed press release. “He also has to deal with his Hobbit-self - Sméagol. It’s up to the players if they want Gollum to have the upper hand when it comes to making important decisions, or if they prefer to allow Sméagol to take over.”
Along the way, players encounter both established characters from the books as well as new ones. It will be interesting to see how the game explores the protagonist’s split personality.
It’s certainly a bit of an unusual title making use of the popular IP and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’s release date won’t see another delay.
In a financial report from late January 2023 – which covers the first 9 months of Nacon’s financial year 2022-23 –, the publisher revealed new details about when The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’s release date might occur.
The game is currently set to launch at some point during the first half of its fiscal year 2023-24. Barring any further delays, this means that we’ll finally get to sneak our way across Middle-earth sometime between April and September 2023.
