Deck13, the developers of Lords of the Fallen and The Surge and who are currently working hard on The Surge 2, revealed that they are working again with Focus Interactive on "a brand-new franchise which builds upon the strengths and expertise of the studio". We spoke to the studio about this new Deck 13 game and can confirm that it will be a new Dark Souls-like title - but will apparently "play a little different."
While the developer is working on releasing their current 'hardcore action RPG' (or, Souls-like) The Surge 2 later this year, they are also beginning work on their next title with Focus Interactive. We've got one piece of concept art already, along with the words "Gather. Surpass. Conquer" which makes it sound more like a strategy game. However, while it may have strategic elements, it will also be a hardcore action-RPG - but it's still a while off yet. See below for more.
We spoke with Jan Klose, the creative director of The Surge 2 at Deck 13, and asked him about the new game. He confirmed that it would be a tough action-RPG in the Souls-like genre - and certainly not a casual one.
"We really like the genre, and we really like is staying on the action side of things, so we don't want to do a franchise or idea that just too casual. We really want to stay on the challenging side of things."
While it will be a challenging action-RPG game, it will be a bit different than what Souls-like or The Surge fans may be expecting.
"We want to do some things a little differently. So we were looking for something where we can do both these things. It will play a little different, but I hope that The Surge 2 fans would like to give it a go too... We have ideas, we have a concept of what we want to do and probably things will still change as we go along. We always want to do something that you don't really know to where it will end up, and feels new, and apply that to these sort of games - and staying true to the genre."
As exciting as this sounds though, we're going to be waiting on the game for a long time yet.
"It's a long way off, just starting production. Right now we're totally focusing on The Surge 2, and making it a cool game. On the other hand, it was very important for us to continue to work with Focus because we really like these guys. They do a very nice job and we really feel at home here. There was mutual drive to do something new together. It's not a small thing, something really big, but it's really just on the horizon right now."
We'll have more information and a preview of The Surge 2 coming soon.
