Publisher Sega and developer Creative Assembly today revealed Grand Cathay as Total War: Warhammer 3’s third playable faction, in a trailer that has its armies fighting the Daemons of Tzeentch.
Described as “one of the oldest and most powerful civilizations,” Grand Cathay is ruled by the children of the Celestial Dragon Emperor, beings who can switch between human and dragon form but also harness the power of the Yin and Yang lores of magic.
Total War: Warhammer 3’s Grand Cathay gives players a choice between two Legendary Lords. Miao Ying, the Storm Dragon, controls and sees to the stalwart defense of the empire’s northern provinces. Zhao Ming, the Iron Dragon, was entrusted the western part of the empire, where he “keeps the desert clans in order, even as the other Dragons question the sanity of their brother.”
In terms of playstyle, Grand Cathay favors defense, its armies “built to stand their ground and grind the enemy down through determined defense and firepower.” At the same time, harmony has a major impact on their effectiveness. The longer they “fight as a single and efficient organism,” the bigger the bonuses they can unlock.
Where units like the Jade Warriors and Celestial Dragon Guard make up their sturdy core, massive Terracotta Sentinels, the Wu-Xing War Compass, and Great-Jade Longma Riders provide much-needed support.
You can watch them in action in the trailer below and catch up on how Kislev and Khorne’s armies differ in our previous coverage.
More information about Grand Cathay will be shared over the coming weeks and, since his daemons appear in the trailer, we’re likely not too far from a Tzeentch roster reveal. Total War: Warhammer 3 was recently delayed, having its release date pushed to early 2022.
