The challenges of Valheim’s ruthless world are best tackled alongside friends and like-minded players, making crossplay one of its most sought after additions.
If you were hoping to see Valheim cross-platform support added, you’ll be happy to learn that, as of patch 0.211.4, developer Iron Gate is officially testing the feature on the survival game’s public testing branch.
Valheim Crossplay
As is often the case with new features in early access titles, Valheim crossplay arrives first on the public testing branch so that players can provide feedback. This allows the team behind the game to squish bugs, adjust balancing, and fix any other issues that might pop up.
- Valheim crossplay status: Available on the public test branch as of September 14, 2022; full release coming later
If you’re running a dedicated server, you’ll be able to enable cross-platform support, allowing players to join via IP address or a server-specific join code.
Although this means that you can team up with others regardless of which platform they use to play Valheim, you will need to make sure that everyone involved is using the same patch version of the game.
Here are the full patch notes for update 0.221.4, as detailed on Steam:
- 'Manage saves’ GUI added so that it’s easier for players to restore/remove saves & backups
- A question mark indicates that a server status is uncertain, while a red X indicates that the server is down. If there is a “shuffle” icon next to the server status, that means the server supports crossplay.
* Minor network optimization for in-game hosting (Less demanding for the host when other players are in the game at the same time)</li>
* ‘Join Game’ tab has been updated. Players can now add favourite servers, and see if a server is running, and if they support crossplay or not.**</li>
* Players can now use the parameter ‘-crossplay’ while running Dedicated servers to support crossplay. When using this parameter, the backend will be running Playfab instead of Steamworks. (A ‘Join code’ will appear when you join a Dedicated server supporting crossplay. Players can use this code to join the server)</li>
That’s what we know about Valheim’s cross-platform support so far. The developer didn’t mention how long testing is expected to last, but it’s likely safe to assume that crossplay will be available on the game’s live version sooner rather than later.
