Valheim’s upcoming Hearth & Home update will bring a series of gameplay tweaks that make certain types of shields more suited to particular gameplay styles, developer Iron Gate revealed in the game’s latest video update.
Tower shields are getting a “significant buff” once the Hearth & Home update lands, granting them “a lot more knockback” when compared to the other shields in Valheim. This also makes them the best option for a defensively-minded playstyle that focuses on tanking multiple opponents.
At the opposite end, bucklers aren’t as potent when it comes to blocking, but compensate by allowing you to parry enemy strikes. If you favor a balanced playstyle in Valheim, you’ll find its round shields to remain trusty companions.
Shields will also be affected by the previously announced food changes. You’ll want to favor health food, since blocking power will be tied to your maximum health when Hearth & Home releases, as will the new Stagger bar which, once filled, seems to render you vulnerable for a short period of time.
Valheim’s 2021 roadmap had a significant portion of content cut from it earlier this year. The Hearth & Home update is currently expected to drop at some point in Q3 2021.
