Now you’ve got your pickaxe you are ready to dive in and grab some shiny ores in Valheim. So go ahead and head off to the Black Forest, making sure you’re kitted out for combat as there’s some nasty creatures lurking about this area.
This is another time we’d suggest making a small outpost, if not for a respawn point, then for storage and to get yourself the rested bonus.
Valheim - Building a smelter
You can unlock the smelter recipe by mining your first ore, and for that tin is easiest… find a river and you’ll find tin.
This recipe needs 20 stone which is easy to find and a surtling core which is not. Surtling cores can be acquired from random chests and dungeons, but for a guaranteed drop you’ll want to find a swamp biome and hunt yourself some surtlings.
If you are struggling to find the surtlings, or don’t fancy tangling with the fire throwing demons, the burial mound dungeons would be the next best bet.
Fuelling the smelter is done by adding coal and an ore together. Coal is obtained from surtling drops, burning raw food, or processing wood in a charcoal kiln. The kiln requires a second surtling core so if you intend to make one it would be a good idea to grab a second before you head back to your base.
