Victoria 3, is “absolutely” getting more expansion passes in the future, Game Director Martin Anward has confirmed in 2025’s first developer diary, putting the worries of some fans to rest.
Following a rocky launch, the grand strategy game seems to have finally found its footing during the past year, especially thanks to the launch of update 1.7 and its first major expansion, Sphere of Influence.
Victoria 3 Getting More Expansion Passes
When the smaller, Pivot of Empire DLC launched without belonging to a new expansion pass – and no immediate mention of one coming later down the line –, players started raising questions about the game’s future. Some feared that we might have another Imperator: Rome situation on our hands.
That, however, is not the case. Anward admits that “the strong negative reaction to the lack of an Expansion Pass for Pivot of Empire” surprised the development team before reassuring players that “there will absolutely be more expansion passes going forward.
“The reason we didn’t do so already is that we’ve found that Expansion Passes work best for us (in terms of being able to plan and deliver high quality releases) when they start off with a major expansion, rather than ending with one, so that is what we’ll be doing going forward.”
Internally, the team considers 2024 “the year that Victoria 3 hit its stride,” which is especially great news for anyone following the game through its ups and downs since release.
“It’s no secret that the game had its issues at launch and that we made some mistakes in the initial post-release period, but from update 1.5 onwards, and particularly after 1.7/Sphere of Influence, we’ve seen excellent playerbase growth and greatly improved community sentiment.”
Anward said that he is “very excited to continue building on these successes to add depth, flavor, and excessively in-depth socioeconomic simulation mechanics to this very special game series that is quite unlike anything else I have ever worked on.”
Although Victoria 3’s update 1.9 is still “some time away,” the team will share, in early spring 2025, more details about the upcoming trade rework, frontline improvements and, hopefully, the game’s next expansion pass.
