GOG has revealed that it’s, unfortunately, being forced to delist the original versions of Warcraft 1 and 2 from its digital store at the “request of Blizzard”. Blizzard no doubt wants consumers to pick up the Warcraft 1 & 2 Remastered versions and pay full whack, which it recently shadow-dropped at the Warcraft Anniversary Event.
Warcraft 1 & 2 will be removed from GOG this December 13. However, if you’ve already purchased or owned the games, you won’t lose access. The preservation gods at GOG are ramping up their Preservation Program, so all future games delisted on the store will be kept updated with compatibility improvements in the future, even if they get taken off the store. What a lovely bunch.
This includes lots of awesome improvements for classic games, like, for example, the internal configuration tool to simplify multiplayer connections in Warcraft 2, and the DXWrapper, which aids compatibility with modern screen resolutions. These features, absent from the versions available on Battle.net, will remain accessible in the GOG versions and are part of what makes them so special.
Better yet, if you use the following discount code, MakeWarcraftLiveForever, you can get them even cheaper with $2 (£1.50) off the price of the Warcraft 1 and 2 bundle if purchased before 13th December.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to work with Blizzard on these titles. While the delisting is unfortunate, we assure you that every user who already owns these games on GOG will continue to benefit from our commitment and have access to versions that remain compatible with modern systems, preserving their experience for years to come.” said Zuzanna Rybacka, head of PR at GOG.
You can pick up the Warcraft I & II Bundle on GOG for £11.89, but make sure you use the discount code to grab a little discount.
