Warhammer 40,000: Darktide Grimoires and Scriptures encourage you to spice up your heretic culling sessions with a bit of book hunting in exchange for extra rewards.
The concept should be familiar to anyone who’s played Vermintide 2, where Scriptures were known as Tomes. But as you dip into Fatshark’s latest grimdark slaughterfest, you’ll learn that Darktide has introduced a handful of changes to how Grimoires and Scriptures work.
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide Grimoires and Scriptures
In Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, Grimoires and Scriptures are only found during missions that list them as secondary objectives.
You can see this very clearly on the mission terminal and, during the pre-order beta, there seem to be at least a few of them active at any given time, once you level up a bit.
The caveat here is that they’re usually higher-difficulty missions and often include modifiers like Endless Horde, which gives you plenty to worry about already.
At this stage of the pre-order beta, you cannot get objectives for both Grimoires and Scriptures during the same mission, but the amount of books you can find is always clearly listed (usually 2 or 3).
The most significant change introduced to Grimoires and Scriptures in Darktide affects their locations. Simply put, you can no longer find them in the same spot across the game’s levels.
Instead, they seem to have multiple preset positions where they can spawn, making tracking them down considerably harder than before.
Levels are split into several chunks, marked by drops, decontamination chambers, or elevators that don’t allow you to return to previous parts of the mission once you get past them.
Based on our time with the game so far, one such area can generally host one Grimoire or Scripture, although we have had runs where we couldn’t find any of them. That being said, it’s unclear how exactly the game determines when to spawn Grimoires and Scriptures.
Although they’re both books you’re supposed to carry with you until the end of the level, there are some important differences to note.
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide’s Grimoires take up the equipment slot that’s otherwise dedicated to ammo or medical crates. They also corrupt a portion of your health while equipped and cannot be dropped.
If things get too hairy, you can opt to destroy them by selecting them and left-clicking, although that translates to fewer or no bonus rewards at the end of the match.
If you die while facing the hordes or fall prey to a crash or disconnect, your Grimoire will be destroyed.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that they seem to emanate a green glow around them, which makes them slightly easier to spot in darker areas.
Warhammer 40,000: Darktide’s Scriptures also take up the equipment slot dedicated to ammo or medical crates but do not corrupt your health pool. You can also drop and pick them up later, allowing you to use crates.
In the pre-order beta, finding the books rewards a relatively small amount of bonus experience and cash. It’s straightforward and not overly generous, but still worth pursuing if you want to level up faster.
Once you reach Trust level 11, you also get access to a weekly contract from Sire Melk that tasks you with collecting a certain number of Grimoires.
Contracts earn you currency that can help you secure higher-quality weapons from Sire Melk’s Requisitorium or gamble for gear.
