The ravenous Tyranids are confirmed as the fifth playable race in Proxy Studios’ 4X strategy game Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics Of War. The DLC introducing the not-so-loveable bugs is set to arrive on PC sometime in January.
The Tyranids that roam across Gladius Prime are escapees from an Astra Militarum containment facility, although that doesn’t make them any less willing to devour other factions.
Warhammer 40,000: Gladius’ Tyranids come with mechanics of their own that set them apart from the other playable factions. They can reclaim biomass from both allied and enemy units, just like they can strip map tiles down to the bedrock. The obtained DNA is used to give their units toxin sacs, acid blood, adrenal glands and the likes, making them better suited for facing different challenges.
Their cities are described as “disposable collections of megafauna, reabsorbed into the swarm when they have served their purpose and local resources are exhausted”. While the Hive Mind controls all Tyranids, units can fall outside of its influence. This turns them into feral beasts roaming the planet and attacking anything in sight.
