Publisher and developer The Astronauts today unveiled a new gameplay trailer for upcoming roguelite first-person shooter Witchfire, highlighting both the title’s fast-paced gunplay and its new open-level design.
Witchfire started development by having its core gameplay loop built around arena-based encounters, before later pivoting to an open-level approach that aims to give players more freedom in how they approach each mission.
The decision to redesign the roguelite’s core experience was the main reason behind Witchfire’s delay late last year. Originally meant to launch in early access during Q4 2022, the title’s release ended up being pushed to sometime in 2023.
Its new gameplay trailer gives us a look at how this redesign changed the game’s combat. If you’d like to delve deeper into this shift, a rather lengthy blog post from October goes into further detail.
In addition, The Astronauts has also confirmed that Witchfire will benefit from Nvidia DLSS 3 support at launch.
40-series graphics card owners will be able to make use of the AI-powered technology’s latest version to get stable, high frame rates without having to compromise when it comes to the game’s visuals.
“You start the game, push all graphics options to the max. You enjoy it for a while but then, especially if it’s an action game, you realize that the framerate is king. So you start lowering the quality of visuals in order to achieve that smooth gameplay,” said Adrian Chmielarz, Creative Director and Co-Founder of The Astronauts.
“DLSS 3 allows the seemingly impossible, high framerate without compromising the visuals. A no brainer for a game like Witchfire, which is both action and beauty.”
Set in grimdark fantasy world where powerful witches war against the Church, Witchfire puts you in the role of a preyer – an immortal witch hunter who uses guns and forbidden magic granted by the Vatican’s sorceres to battle their enemies.
The title is slated to enter early access in 2023, exclusively through the Epic Games Store. The full version will also be available on Steam and consoles, according to the developer.
