The subject of a World of Warcraft console release date has been brought up several times over the years but has, so far, not become a reality. The MMORPG was originally developed with PC in mind, well before the likes of the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, or Xbox One existed, and launched during a time when Blizzard had yet to set its eye on other platforms.
Since then, things have changed significantly. As most of the developer’s titles are now multiplatform releases, one has to wonder if a World of Warcraft console release date might also be steadily approaching. According to Executive Producer Holly Longdale, it could now be more of a possibility than ever.

“Of course! Yeah, we talk about it all the time,” Longdale told GamesRadar+ when asked about WoW potentially making the jump to consoles.
The constantly improving hardware of Microsoft and Sony’s consoles – especially the jump from the PS4/Xbox One to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S – have also potentially removed a lot of technical hurdles that would have kept Blizzard from thinking about turning WoW into a multiplatform title in the past.

Longdale believes that the studio is“pretty well positioned [to release WoW on consoles], which is kind of why we talk about it.”
The MMORPG already features gamepad support, as of its Shadowlands expansion, but in terms of balancing it for console “the approachability is likely going to be different,” according to the executive producer.
Be that as it may, a WoW console release date is probably not on the cards for the very near future.
“Right now, we’re focused on the Worldsoul Saga,” Longdale added. “But if that comes up then we’ll reexamine things but, man, we’ve got enough to deal with right now.”
If we were to speculate for a moment, a WoW PS4/Xbox One release does seem unlikely. Given how we’re well into the life cycle of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, were a WoW console release to happen this generation, we’d expect the developer to not make it a cross-gen product.
With Blizzard now being part of Microsoft, though, it’s possible that the latter might opt to make the MMORPG a console exclusive, skipping the PS5 and making the Xbox Series X/S more appealing in the process.
Regardless of when and how WoW’s console release date is approached, this sure sounds like a great time to keep an eye on announcements from the publisher, especially if you count among those who skipped the title’s PC version.
