11 Bit’s excellent survival game This War of Mine hasn’t even received a set of mod tools yet, and it’s already got a tonne of community-created content over on its Steam Workshop page. Granted, most of those appear to be ways to add Gabe Newell to your game, but still.
We’ve scoured the lists for some of our very favourite offerings. And there’s Gabe on the list as well, because let’s face it, we just couldn’t help ourselves.
Until Dawn Characters / Created by Potassium Permanganate 1998
Hey look, it’s the unfortunate cast of recent PS4 horror hit Until Dawn. Not content with spending their weekend being stalked through the woods by a relentless serial murderer, they’ve decided to follow that holiday up by visiting a war zone.

Personally I’m not convinced that Walking Dead lead character Rick Grimes has done a particularly good job of leading his band of survivors through a zombie apocalypse, but perhaps he’ll fare better here. Grimes, as you’d expect, has the ‘familiar with guns’ trait.

It’s 1945, and Hitler, Goering, Goebbels, and Himmler are stuck in Berlin, attempting to avoid the attention of the invading Russian army. Hitler is refusing to share his coffee with anyone else, and Goering keeps disappearing out the back and returning with chocolate stains on his uniform. This is perhaps one of the few scenarios in This War of Mine where you’ll want all the survivors to get caught.

A sadistic, homicidal clown with a penchant for comedy-themed weapons. Undoubtedly the exact person you want alongside you when you’re trying to survive a war.
The Sparrows / Created by Myriamor
A more story-focused scenario than most of the others you’ll find on the workshop, The Sparrows allows you to control the fate of a ragtag group of survivors led by a former police officer. You’ve got three characters, each with their own unique skills, trying to survive in the middle of winter. Supplies will be low, and “trading is advised” according to the creator.

Cold War / Created by Real 7 Aus
If you fancy something a little more challenging, this scenario might be just the thing. It’s set in the middle of an “extreme” winter, so your resources are particularly low and the weather is particularly dangerous.
That should keep you busy for a while. As noted, the game’s mod tools aren’t quite out yet, but expect us to update this post as and when more complex mods start to appear.
