Diablo 4 takes inspiration from all of the series’ history while adding new elements that make it a truly modern action-RPG. One of them is the battle pass that provides a steady cadence of rewards to players who regularly slaughter demons and decide to spend a few extra bucks.
Diablo 4’s battle pass comes at a time when many paid AAA games have begun including them at launch. Whether you’re on board or not for it becoming industry standard, this article covers what we know about how it will work when the fourth entry in the series opens its gates.
Diablo 4 Battle Pass
Diablo IV’s post-launch support relies on a seasonal model, which should be familiar to anyone who’s played its predecessor.
Features like Diablo III’s free season journey return, and completing its objectives acts as one way to progress through the newly-introduced battle pass, alongside playing the ARPG regularly.
Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo IV’s battle pass has both a free and a premium track. The former is made up of 27 free tiers and is available to all players without requiring any purchase.
Through it, we can obtain cosmetics and Smoldering Ashes, a resource used to gain Season Blessings. They provide characters with a bonus to earning XP, Gold, or Obols, and more can be active at a given time.
The premium battle pass boasts 63 tiers that “will not provide any in-game power, but instead unlocks tiers that provide Cosmetics unique to that Season and the Platinum currency,” as noted by the developer.
Platinum can be used to purchase future battle passes or cosmetics from the in-game shop. It is, otherwise, purchasable using real money.
Speaking to Forbes, the developer confirmed that the amount of Platinum available as part of the Premium track is not enough to purchase the next season’s Battle Pass, at least during Season 1.
Diablo IV’s premium battle pass will cost 1,000 Platinum (the equivalent of $9.99 USD). An accelerated battle pass will also be available, including everything in the Premium Battle Pass, alongside 20 tier skips, and a special cosmetic item, all for the price of 2,800 Platinum (the equivalent of $24.99 USD).
Although you have the option to purchase Diablo IV battle pass tiers, this won’t accelerate the pace at which you earn season boosts, since applying them also requires you to hit certain level milestones.
All other rewards can, however, be unlocked instantly via tier purchases. It is currently unclear whether or not we’ll have the option to progress through battle passes from past seasons after they conclude.
Diablo General Manager Rod Fergusson has also confirmed that battle pass cosmetics “are class agnostic so you earn them for all classes.”
