Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a single-player action RPG through and through, which means it’s got a decent amount of side quests too. While most of them focus on fleshing out characters as well as entire factions, others play out more like treasure hunts, and we think ‘The Warden Vault’ might be a tricky one.
Before we give you the full rundown on the vault’s location and all the steps needed to unlock it and access all the juicy loot, make sure to check out our choices of the best Dragon Age: The Veilguard Mods that have been released so far. Moreover, we have short guides to the max level caps for both Rook and the companions as well as the crucial Minrathous or Treviso choice that pops up early on.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Warden Vault location
While most quests in Dragon Age: The Veilguard are fairly straightforward to follow and complete, ‘The Warden Vault’ requires players to actually explore the Rivain Coast region and work out some small puzzles. While the location, an old fort once controlled by the Grey Wardens, is partially explored in the main quest during which Taash is recruited, activating and advancing ‘The Warden Vault’ isn’t possible until that mission is completed and Taash (and therefore Rook thanks to Solas’ dagger) gains the ability to shoot dragon fire.
The actual Warden Vault is found down a set of stairs to the right of the main hall, behind a set of columns. It’s very hard to miss right as you enter the patio-like hall. It’s important to mention enemies will respawn here every time you leave the area, so be ready for a fight before focusing on the riddle of sorts. Anyway, the entrance to the Vault is blocked by Drakestone, but Taash can melt it. Do so and you’ll find its door and a nearby note that gives the players clues to unlock it and activates the respective quest.
First lock location and solution
You can complete the three locks in any order you want, but it seems that most players are coming across the ‘levers and torches’ more often than not. In fact, you can stumble upon it without having even started the quest.
To reach this room, go to the fort’s courtyard near the second-floor ladder and look for a hallway that’s full of boxes and other wooden debris. Clear all that to reveal a distinct wall with three levers mounted on shields that resemble the locks near the door we want to unlock.
You want to pull the levers in this order: left, right, center. After that, leave the room and take two rights to reach a portcullis that was closed before. Take the ladder up and you’ll see three seals that are lit, use the switch and head inside to find a chest as well as one final lever under a larger seal. With that activated, we’ve sorted out one of the Vault locks.
Second lock location and solution
If you return to the hall where you fought the Antaam before finding the entrance to the Vault and starting the quest, you can head through a door to the west and follow a long hall, but look to your right once there’s an ‘outside’ section to find a skeleton of some poor warrior who was stabbed. You’ll recognize it because of the glowing butterflies. Interact with it and a ghost will start floating around and go through a wall nearby. You can follow their general direction to find the next one.
Head north (more or less) and go back outside turning through the courtyard you should know well by now and up some stairs. A second skeleton is found near the western part, under the shaded part of the scenery. Interact with it and return to the northern entrance of the fort. On the path right outside, close to the fast travel beacon, you’ll find the third skeleton. Finally, return to the main hall and run towards the southern corner (walking past the stairs that lead to the Vault). A final ghost awaits there and reveals the location of the lock behind the wall next to them. Activate it.
It must be noted you can just retrace your steps through the entire fort and the outside section of the main building and you’ll find the ghosts/skeletons in no time (as long as you pay attention to every corner) if you’re having trouble with these directions.
Third lock location and solution
Past the ‘glowing butterflies skeleton’ that we used to start the previous step, you’ll find a large open courtyard that marks the end of the explorable area of the fort. Clear out the enemies and look up and to the west to see a Gaatlock barrel you can blow up thanks to Taash’s ability to break some debris and extend a ladder down.
Climb up and you’ll find a green wisp that will follow you as soon as you move near it. This is a timed sequence, so don’t stick around looking for loot (you can do that later). Go back the way you entered the courtyard and head left, towards another Drakestone formation you’d probably seen and cleared before. If not, ask Taash to clear it. Reach a hole in the wall and the wisp will reanimate a skeleton and pull a lever you can’t reach.
It must be noted the wisp will respawn where you found it if you get lost or are too slow at first, but you’ve got plenty of time to get to the hole in the wall.
Warden Vault rewards
After activating all three locks, return to the main hall one last time and down to the Warden Vault, with the large door now unsealed. Inside, you’ll find loot, gear upgrades, another memento, and the unique Shard of the Void ring, which modifies (in a really weird way) shocking weapons. Plus, you’ll get the usual XP for completing the quest.
