Not everything is as it appears to be in Baldur’s Gate 3, where you can never be sure if the character you’re about to help has ulterior motives, making decisions crucial.
Auntie Ethel is one such NPC, and she has an intriguing offer for you to consider. So, should you let Auntie Ethel ‘kiss’ your eye?
Should you let Auntie Ethel take your eye in BG3?
Auntie Ethel can be found in Druid’s Grove during Act 1, where she appears as a frail old woman. If you reveal that you have a Mind Flayer Tadpole in your head she offers to help remove it, but not right away.
You will meet Auntie Ethel again in the Sunlit Wetlands and depending on your choices here, it will begin the Save Mayrina quest.
Continuing into the Wetlands, you find the Riverside Teahouse and engage Ethel in conversation again. She will be angry if you poke your nose into Mayrina’s business, but will propose a deal if you don’t.
For a price, she offers to remove the Mind Flayer Tadpole. All she asks is to ‘kiss’ your eye, but this choice has serious consequences.</b>
The Choice and Its Consequences
Accepting Ethel’s offer will not remove the parasite, but will still impart the cost. The character used will gain the Paid the Price debuff, which results in one of your eyes becoming whited out.
This has serious gameplay effects, and players with a milky eye will have:
- A -1 penalty to Perception
- Inability to hit Criticals again
- Disadvantage on attacks against Hags
- A +1 to Intimidation
Conclusion
Ultimately, it is a bad idea to let Auntie Ethel take your eye unless you’re really wanting to roleplay an Intimidation run. Perception is far more useful, and losing the ability to Crit can severely hamper your combat ability.
