Starfield is set to be Bethesda’s most ambitious project to date with legions of procedurally generated alien planets to explore, its extensive supporting cast, and an epic space opera tale at the heart of the game.
Bethesda is no stranger to telling great stories and crafting unforgettable settings that players can get lost in. Despite the impressive achievements the studio has made, the one thing they’ve never quite cracked in their expansive RPGs is in-game romance. Skyrim allowed you to get married, have kids, and even adopt a fox, but it was pretty bare bones. Fallout 4 was a nudge in the right direction but couldn’t quite rival other games in the same space which has left players hoping that the studio will embrace romance options in Starfield. Here’s everything we know about romance and relationship options in Starfield.
Are There Romance Options in Starfield?
It’s been confirmed that Starfield will have romance options and it looks like Bethesda is looking to offer more compelling and fleshed-out subplots this time around. Starfield director, Todd Howard, has previously stated that Bethesda is largely hoping to offer more complex character dynamics which will mostly apply to companions, but also romantic partners.
In an interview with GamesRadar, Howard claimed that relationships will not fall into a trope of “they like you, or they don’t like you”. Instead, the relationship will be more dynamic. If a player commits a particularly heinous action, or they do something their partner doesn’t like, it will be reflected in the relationship. Your partner will voice their unhappiness and be upset, but that does not necessarily mean the end of the relationship.
In Starfield, players can engage in romantic relationships with a variety of companions throughout the extensive campaign. However, specific details regarding which companions are available for romance have not been disclosed.
It is important to mention that these relationships will be portrayed in a relatively PG manner. Starfield has recently been assigned an R 18+ rating in Australia due to its inclusion of drug use, but the game does not feature explicit sexual content.
