The DOOM Loot Box Mod development team wanted to update the old classic's systems to better provide players with a sense of pride and accomplishment for their actions. Initial values for drop rates were selected from data from the original DOOM and looked at average per-player key earn rates on a daily basi - okay, I can't do this anymore. All weapons and powerups in the game are replaced by boxes which need to be unlocked with keys dropped by enemies periodically, and a random weapon or powerup is dropped when a box is opened amid a shower of confetti. The mod also adds a real-money store where bundles of keys and boxes can be bought (complete with "most popular" and "best value" tags), though the shop servers are "offline".
