According to leaked paragraphs and some artwork, Tomb Raider has gone back to the drawing board, with a ”young and inexperienced” Lara on her way.
A spy within the Eidos ranks has slipped out the information, with screens showing Lara on horseback plugging foes with arrows. It looks to be a mix of open-world and survival horror.
Both 4player Co-Op and Joystiq have been contacted to remove the leaked artworks and certain information that’s got out, adding great weight to the rumour as completely true.
This news is hardly shocking given that Eidos’ Ian Livingstone said we should expect something that ”will surprise a lot of people and reinvigorate the franchise,” with the next game. The most important part of this new game is that it will serve as Lara Croft’s origins story.
”When a sudden storm destroys her research vessel, a young and inexperienced Lara Croft finds herself stranded on a mysterious and remote island hidden off the shores of Japan. Despite several signs of various inhabitants the island is oddly deserted, and an uneasy feeling settles in as strange sounds emerge from the shadows,” reads some of the leaked text.
”With only her determination, inner strength, and resourcefulness to help her, Lara must overcome the challenges of a harsh and unforgiving journey that will take her across a vast island wilderness and deep into the claustrophobic and menacing underground tombs from the island’s past.”
”As she struggles to prevail through brutal combat encounters and treacherous exploration, Lara will be pushed to her limits and forced to adapt to her situation in order to survive and escape from the lethal predators that stalk her every move.”
• Origin story. “This new Tomb Raider concept reboots the franchise by exploring the origins of Lara Croft’s transformation into a hardened adventurer as you unravel the story behind the island’s mysterious past.”
A whole new combat system and weapons at Lara’s disposal are said to be hinted at. Is this game to tie-in with the new Lara Croft movie everyone keeps whispering about in Hollywood? The new flick is said to be a ‘reboot’ too… meaning no Jolie and her twins?
