Good news is that you can get dedicated servers - hooray! Bad news is that you have to pay for it, either as a monthly sub or as microtransactions.
Activision has partnered with gaming server provider GameServers.com, who is exclusively handling the server needs of Black Ops for the PC crowd. ”We are extremely excited about this unprecedented relationship with Activision to offer dedicated servers exclusively for Black Ops,” said David Aninowsky, GameServers CEO.
”We are placing a great amount of pressure on ourselves to ensure that we exceed any and all expectations,” he added. 18-player ranked servers are going for £9.95 a month with unranked available for 66p per player. They have a pre-order section for servers.
On release day you get instant server activation, no fees for setup, you can cancel anytime, and a 5-day money back guarantee. You won’t be billed until the servers go live and can have 24-players max for unranked matches and 18-players ranked.
Treyarch community manager, Josh Olin says this partnership would allow for better security for multiplayer. ”If you rent a server, you will still have the ability to Kick, Ban, and Configure it the way you see fit,” he said.
”Of course Ranked servers will have some set configurations that can’t be messed with; but you will still have the power to administrate your servers as a customer of GameServers.” This is purely for those who want dedicated servers as otherwise Black Ops multiplayer is entirely free on the PC.
Is it fair Activision is forcing this pay-to-play method for dedicated servers even for unranked matches? Does this mean PC mods are totally out of the question?
