This is why Sony hasn’t been performing Tsujino-san later clarified, noting outsiders can’t understand the ‘founding principles’ as they’re Japanese.
Koichiro Tsujino said during a seminar that Sony ”should never have been run by a foreigner.” He refused to elaborate at the time saying he’d get into trouble. Tsujino-san was educated in the United States. He later cleared up some of his meaning.
Basically no one outside of Japan can ‘understand’ Sony given that its foundations are inherently Japanese. It’s thought that Sony picked Howard Stringer because he was in fact a foreigner, meaning he wasn’t swayed by their politics - free to make hard calls.
While Stringer hasn’t led Sony into a profitable utopia he has worked tremendously hard and succeeded in stopping the corporate giant haemorrhaging money. It’s believed that Sony Japan will next appoint someone much closer to home as their new boss.
Tsujino-san praised Sony for how it used to be - leading innovation - but the firm was just too slow for this digital web era and suffered for not adapting fast enough.
