In a bid to ‘increase visibility’ of titles, Steam now supports a new feature called Steam Tags where users can attach custom tags to titles. Tags that prove popular will help when you go searching.
A new recommended section will also compare what games you’ve got in your Library against these tags. Steam also introduces new filter options, such as if a title supports a feature or not.
Categories are now offered like single-player, multiplayer, Steam Workshop, controller support etc. Right now the system is in beta as they need to ”get some data into the system”.
As you would expect with a new system like this, some people are having fun tagging the likes of Dark Souls with ‘casual’. This means it will take some time for the pranks and trolls to be flushed out and the most popular tags rising to the top, and hence why it’s still in beta. Swears ”will be filtered out” and not show up in popular tags.
Initially developers define what tags apply to their title but these may eventually ”become surpassed as the most relevant tags on your product if users are frequently applying another tag.” To find out more visit Steam’s Tag FAQ.
