Amplitude’s fantasy 4X title Endless Legend has finally moved out of Early Access this week, and that means the last of the game’s oddball factions has been added.
The Cultists of the Eternal End are an interesting anomaly, a faction designed by the fans rather than the developers as part of Amplitude’s ‘Faction Creation Competition’. Here’s a new trailer giving a brief insight into their motivations.
The Cult have a slightly less noble goal than most - they want to destroy the world. Humanoid abominations created by the ancient race of the Endless, they maintain only a single city, and rely on enslaving and indoctrinating lesser races to do their bidding.
It’s another example of Endless Legend’s ability to introduce interesting, varied factions with radically different play styles. The Cult were dreamt up by Amplitude forum user Nosferatiel, and you can see his initial conceptual pitch here. Art and unit design was provided by other community members, so the entire process of the faction’s creation was almost all down to the Endless Legend fan-base. I spoke to game director Max von Knorring about the process earlier this year.
”What we also wanted to do was, unlike when we did this in Endless Space, to let the community choose for themselves,” he explained. ”So we didn’t interfere with the selection of the winner, which brought us a very interesting faction. Super challenging in terms of design and implementation, but at the same time it’s refreshing for us and it’s cool also to work with the winners, when we provide the models and assets and gameplay adapted to our constraints, to make sure that the guys are happy and that we’re as close as possible to what they’ve proposed.”
Endless Legend is out now on Steam for $34.99.
